The cold winter months are almost upon us. Here are some things to look forward to.
#10- Movies
Winter months usually provide some of the best movies as directors hope to have their products fresh in the minds of the Academy for the Oscars.
#9- Holiday treats
Gingerbread houses, Green and Red M&M’s, Red cream Oreos, those cookies that sort of look like angels or Christmas trees, etc.
#8- "Winter Song” by Sarah Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson
It’s just a good song. Although I have heard that the Elise Lindsey and Pamela Porter version is better.
#7- Sports
Great sports throughout the winter months. Bowl games, NFL playoffs, College hoops, and this year some winter Olympics.
#6- Holiday Decorations
If it is going to get dark at 3:30, might as well light up the town with strands of lights.
#5- Snow Assaults
Snow ball fights, pushing people into snow banks, and Andy’s favorite, shaking tree branches to cover unexpected people in snow.
#4- Pond Hockey
Regardless of your skating abilities, it is always fun to pretend to be Gretzky for an hour. That Bobby Stacks though, kid’s a bender playing JV puck.
#3- Christmas Carols
“Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky shepherd boy?” ‘Tis the season to unleash the golden pipes with some caroling.
#2- The Reggie Lewis Center
Ok, so Curtis won’t let you drink your Gatorade Tiger in the field house, but the Reggie is still the cat’s pajamas. Mr. Meagher’s angelic voice over the P.A. system, Bono’s obituary, and of course February 27th 2009 around 7:45PM. (Hey that’s right around the time Xaverian’s 4x800 won the State Championship, weird.)
#1- Sweaters
I love wearing sweaters. Nice Cashmere ones to ugly holiday ones, sweaters are sweet. Until the cotton turtleneck comes back in style (I’m working on it), sweaters are my clothing top of choice to keep me warm in the winter.

Gabe's Run
John Bleday, Andrew Stillman, John Fisher and myself woke up earlier than desired this morning to head up north for the second annual Gabe's Run. The 5 kilometer trail race was a benefit for the Gabriel Pacione Memorial Scholarship fund. Gabe was an amazing runner and a great friend to the four of us. Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, I think it's safe to assume a swell time was had by all.
The ride up to Hamilton was highlighted by the Ipod DJ skills of Peter Dolan. "Cars" by Gary Numan, "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League, "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, just to name a few. But no "Wagon Wheel". What the hell Andy? Fish and I certainly made the right call by pre-registering. Those long sleeve shirts are super. Although mine was given to me dirty... It was nice to socialize with all the other Massachusetts track alumni we like so much. oh wait, never mind.
The pre-race routine was rather uneventful, that is until we found "the playroom". While short-lived, 360 dunks on 8 foot basketball hoops and some pegging each other with orange gator balls was certainly an enjoyable way to pass the time and warm-up for the big race. We sure know how to not make friends. Escaping out the rear exit to avoid being scolded, we quickly realized how underdressed we were for a windy, rainy, late November morning.
We eventually shivered over to the starting line around 11:13 for the 11:15 start time. 15 agonizing minutes later the starter shot the gun and the charge began. "This is my nightmare!" exclaimed Fish. Very early Andy made sure that none of us were going to stay dry. Real cute. The mud was ridiculous, and on the descent of Scilly's Hill, it was a challenge to not slip and fall. A challenge I was not able to overcome. "Down goes Dolan!".
The race was taken at a leisurely place for the four of us, until the final 150 meters. John and I kicked to line and it was hardly close. Dolan for the win! We used the biggest puddle we saw to "wash" the mud off our legs and quickly ran to the school for shelter. Much to the dismay of Bleday, a flip of the coin determined that we enjoy a quick lunch at the Beverly Bertucci's before heading back south.
Already looking forward to Gabe's Run 2010!
